Poetry: Darkness

They Always Fall Down.

Darkness falls and drags down fear

As birds take flight from weary trees.

The wind it talks in groaning tones

of howling sighs and mournful pleas.

A house it stands in shadows deep

Its windows dusty, watching eyes.

The door flaps open in the wind

And from the depths a woman cries.

The girl, a maiden of dark hair

of golden skin and panting breath,

runs from the house as terror brings

impending doom and violent death.

Her eyes convey the frightful truth

Her mouth is twisted in a scream.

She cannot speak of what she's heard

Nor tell a soul of what she's seen.

Her life she carries in her hands

as through the woods she runs in haste.

The branches seem to hold her back

As twigs and leaves they stab her face.

Behind her sounds of laughter come

A manic screech of evil glee.

The darkness of all hell is loose

and living things must hide and flee.

"Oh help me please!" the woman screams

as breath unholy taints the air.

A hand does thrust from shadows deep

Its bloody nails they scratch and tear.

She runs so fast this shrieking girl

as crows they scream from seething sky.

and as the clouds make angry sounds

the moon it hides its fearing eye.

It cannot look at what will come

and drags a cloud across its face,

as down below the girl she weakens

and the beast increases pace.

But just as all hope seems to wane

and death is certain as the night

a road ahead comes into view

a welcoming and hopeful sight.

The lights of cars bring slight relief

maybe a haven can be found

but as she steps up to the road

she trips and falls onto the ground.

The beast it laughs with devilish glee

then reaching down, he grabs her hair

and with a howl of dark intent

he drags her screaming to his lair.

The crows they form a mournful group

In resignation they make no sound

They know what happens in scenes like this..

The girl who runs, she always falls down.
