The debate over legalizing marijuana

by hoopee

As many of you may know, Medical Marijuana has been approved in 10 states, however the enforcement of Federal laws is being taken up by local authorities.

As a person who has many clients who have to use Medical Marijuana, there seems to be no better option for most of them. While the controversy around Medical Marijuana is still a political issue and not a Medical Issue.

Many clients are allergic to opiates, the most addictive form of medication available (e.g. vicodin, morphine, oxycodone, oxycontin, etc) Clients report severe allergic reactions to these drugs while trying to treat pain, whether temporary or chronic pain syndrome. California has been the only state to really make advances in this area, not to mention that Colorado has made possession of under 1 ounce of marijuana legal, or at least not a crime.

Washington state approved a Medical Marijuana law over 10 years ago. Since then law enforcement has ignored or been ignorant of the state laws governing Medical Marijuana. One client was stopped in his car and was asked by Police "where's the stuff"? The client gave it to the officer and after 30 minutes, the officer was smiling ear to ear that he had stopped his first legal patient and didn't have to go through an hour of paperwork and booking someone.

Stores that provide Medical Marijuana in all states charge the same, sometimes more, than buying the drug on the streets. This is not safe and the quality or relief given is not guaranteed. In California, many Pot Stores have been busted by Federal authorities, however, no patients with small growing operations for personal use or patients smoking pot have not been bothered for the most part. The legislature and voters passed a Compassionate law for the usage of Medical Marijuana on the state level, and has been enforced accordingly.

Today in Washington State, where the law has been in effect for 10 years, a police officer on a bike rode past a business and smelled Pot. He went in, made the individuals leave with no arrests. However, less than an hour later the City Prosecutor made the police serve a warrant for the seizure of all items in the store and arrest of the owner of the store. The Washington state legislature has recently decided that 24 ounces of Medical Marijuana is a quantity that can reasonably be used in 2 months for those with debilitating diseases. However, the understanding and enforcement of that law remains unchanged. Cops on power trips are arresting people regardless of their doctor's
