Once upon a time, there was a magical staff. This staff was kept under heavy guard by the king's guards. One day, a rogue walked to the building housing the staff. He swiftly and skillfully silenced the guards and stole the staff. He made off with the staff and ran to his home deep in the mountains.
Many years passed and the rogue found a young boy. He decided to take the boy under his wing and raise him. The boy was very inquisitive and always wanted to learn. He would follow the rogue everywhere and watch everything he did. Eventually, the boy began to call the rogue "father". The boy saw the rogue take the magical staff out of a closet in the house once and asked what it was. The rogue lied and said it was a gift given to him by a king. One day, the rogue decided to take the boy on a journey. They were going to go and find the legendary Spirit's Tomb.
He took the staff with him as his only protection and the boy did not ask why. They traveled for 2 whole days with little rest. When they finally reached the area where the tomb was supposed to be, they found nothing. They rested there for a night and continued searching around the area until they found a misplaced stone. The stone was very big and very heavy, impossible to move. The stone was even sealed with some sort of wax to make sure nobody could get in.
They went to a town nearby to see if they could ask anybody for help. Coincidentally, the nearest town was the town the rogue had stolen the staff from years before. They walked into the castle and asked the king about the tomb. This was a new king and he had no idea about the magical staff or its theft. He told them that there was a key to get in. It was a ring, in fact, a ring that he was wearing on his finger just then. The rogue had to hold himself back for he wanted to just cut the finger off and take the ring right then and there. He asked, politely, if he could have the ring, but the king refused. They left the castle and did not notice the nobleman in dark clothes glaring at the rogue with hard, old eyes.
The rogue and the boy rented a room in an inn to stay the night. By now, the boy had learned what his "father" was and did not mind. They waited until it was dark enough and sneaked to the castle. The rogue, at this point, always carried the staff with him because he thought he had nothing to fear by carrying it with him. He assumed anyone who knew about the staff was long gone by now. They climbed the wall and the rogue gazed in through the window.
