Sweet, soft and sophisticated. These three words can easily depict a Persian cat. If you are looking for a cat breed that is calm, laid back and enjoys warming up your pillows, a Persian cat is the breed for you. Learn about this sophisticated cat's history, its looks, its temperament, and the basic care required to make this special breed healthy and happy.
• History
Persian cats have been famous and admired throughout history. It is believed that the breed originated in Iran which was formerly known as Persia (thus the breed's name). If you notice that aristocratic look in the Persian's cat facial expression, consider that specimens were sent to Europe where they were cherished and owned by nobles in France and Italy. The breed was introduced in England in 1871 were they became popular and bred. North America discovered the breed in the late 19th century where it bloomed in popularity. It is no wonder why this breed is the most notorious cat breed in the United States!
• Appearance
Persians have typical "pushed in" noses due to their brachycephalic head structure. Some specimens have this feature more pronounced than others, in some cases even causing major respiratory problems and excessive eye tearing. A Persian cat's eyes are large and expressive while their ears are small and set apart. They overall are large, muscular, and short legged with large paws displaying fur in between the toes. Their main characteristic is their fur which comes in many colors and is long, silky and most of all, luxuriously soft.
• Temperament
Persian cats are sweet creatures with calm demeanors. They are not overly active making them ideal apartment pets. They do not thrive outdoors and are best kept strictly indoors. They are not intrusive cats and leave you space, yet they are sweet and will come to you every now and then, in search of attention. They are not much vocal and do not typically engage in unnecessary conversations, therefore, preserving their gentle meow for priority issues such as attention.
• Care
Because of their fur, they are considered high maintenance cats. Daily grooming is necessary to avoid painful matting. Total shave downs may be necessary when the matting is excessive and painful. Their eyes need wiped daily as well. Some Persians with excessive pushed in noses may suffer from heat strokes and exercise intolerance.Hairballs are a common concern because of the excessive fur swallowed when grooming. Hairball products that prevent their formation may be helpful.
Persian cats make wonderful pets. They are perfect purr babies that love the comfort of their home. They may be needy groom-wise, but you may ask any Persian cat owner and they will likely tell you that it they definitely worth it!
