The BEST Restaurant Hashbrowns right at home! With a few simple ingredients you can make the hashbrowns you can't get enough of. Sounds too easy and basic based on the ingredients, but as soon as you taste them you will never believe what came from 4/5 ingredients!
Ingredients:
Potatoes
Season Salt
Salt/Pepper
Butter
Onion (optional)
First, heat up about a tablespoon of butter in large frying pan. Slice/dice (depending on what you prefer) 1/2 an onion and let it brown with the butter. You may have to add a little more butter. Let cook until light brown and tender. Add a few dashes of season salt. *If you choose not to add the onion skip this step!
While the onion is browning, start cutting the potatoes in to small cubes. I usually make about 3-4 potatoes and as a general note: on average 1 potatoe = 1 serving.
Add the potatoes to the frying pan with the onion or just with the butter if you are not using an onion. Add a few dashes of salt and pepper. Sprinkle season salt generously over the potatoes. Add a few more tablespoons of butter (at least 3-4). Cook over low to medium heat for about minutes or until tender.
KEY TO COOKING POTATOES: potatoes tend to get mushy when moved around a lot. The key to keeping your potatoes tender without falling apart is only stirring when needed to prevent burning. Typically you should only stir the potatoes 5-6 times while cooking.
After stirring the first few times you might need to add a few more sprinkles of season salt. REMEMBER: salt can ALWAYS be added, but NEVER taken away.
As long as there is butter in the bottom of your pan and you stir when needed the potatoes should be done in 15-20 minutes and if you're like me a couple squirts of ketchup will do the trick. Add seasoning if needed salt, pepper, season salt. ENJOY!
