Women: Health benefits of lifting weights

Whether your goal is fat loss, increased strength, or a tight, toned body, weight training is a tool that can get you there, often surprisingly quickly! Many women tend to over-look this tool in favor of cardio - sometimes because of negative misconceptions, other times because they just underestimate it.

Here, I will summarize some of the greatest benefits that weight training offers for women, in order to demonstrate why you should all be picking up those dumbbells!

1) Appearance

One of the main reasons that women (and often men for that matter) first pick up weights is to get that toned, lean-looking "gym" body and, make no mistake, weight-training definitely delivers. It does not take long, on a regular weight-training program, to start noticing tighter muscles, looser clothing, and fat that melts away. Of course, this does take work, but many find that weight-training is very enjoyable, almost addictive!

Some women shy away from weight-training for fear that they will turn into massive, muscular behemoths, but this fear is the result of an urban legend. Almost all women lack the amount of testosterone that would be required for that to happen. For women, weight-training typically tones the body rather than bulking it up. So don't let fears about turning into the "Incredible Hulkess" keep you away from the weight section of the gym!

2) Greater Strength

While an improved appearance is an excellent confidence-booster, stronger muscles will benefit you in other areas of your life as well. Even everyday tasks like lifting heavy boxes, opening jars, and running up stairs can be made easier by lifting weights, and can do so surprisingly quickly. If you play sports, you will most likely see improved endurance and performance.

3) Higher Metabolism

The greater a body's lean muscle mass the more calories it burns, even at rest. Because of this, weight-training makes it easier for women to keep fat off or to lose fat. Think of building muscle as "turning up the dial" on how many calories your body burns.

4) Physical Health

Strength-training is beneficial for a woman's health in many ways. A stronger body is more resistant to injury, and this can become especially important in older people who begin to be at risk of such injuries as broken bones. These types of problems are preventable, and strength-training is a great way to ensure that your body is in optimal shape.

5) Mental Health

A good exercise program can help fight stress and make a person feel more confident, healthy, and mentally-alert. Many people report that it helps them to sleep better and even that they find themselves eating better and adopting healthier habits in other areas of their lives.

These are but a few of the reasons for women to consider embarking on a weight-training program. Try it out - you'll be glad you did!
