Reflections: Reasons to love winter

Winter has a more settled, restful, tranquil feeling to it-in a way hibernatory for humans too. It's like our world has contracted somewhat into just a solid, restful mode. Summer means a more hectic lifestyle, with vacations, swimming, hiking; everybody soaking in the rays in one form or another. Winter is more peaceful, sometimes with less congestion on the roads, fewer people congregating. People are more cosy in their homes, wrapped in their blankets, in front of fireplaces, drinking hot chocolate. If they are congregated in large numbers outside, it's usually for holiday festivals, parades and shopping, and little kids staring almost hypnotically at the toys they want. People stroll through the stores and streets clad in multicolored layers of winter clothing, adorned with scarves and topped off with usually ebony-colored gloves. The atmosphere is of celebration and happiness over the assorted holidays that congregate during the season for all the faiths.

At times, winter is surrealistic: placid, calm, especially with layers of fresh snow before it turns into slush and is well-treaded on by pedestrians and vehicles alike, leaving deep and murky puddles that pedestrians and motorists do their seasonal dance around. Sounds seem more enhanced during the snow and cold periods, sometimes amplified over larger distances by the colder air and reverbating and echoing off the snow banks, gaining amplitude in the chilled winter air. The sun hangs lower in the sky, seemingly hibernating itself, in its spectacular solar essence as the nights grow longer and the days shorter. It is part of the seasonal procession of winter that I love so much.

I also love watching the snowflakes eddy through the cold air currents, like mother nature's marionettes, transforming my view of everything in the cold silence of winter. Or the sound of the multidinous pellets of snow hitting the ground and quickly building up as an endless shimmeringly iridescent blanket of fresh snow that seems to engulf everything in a 'crystalline'- tsunami that boggles our imagination during the season. Fresh layers of snow also pile up on buildings and trees, adding to the transformation of the landscape by mother nature's 'paint brush' into something eerie, yet so fantastic and profoundly beautiful. We gasp at the changed landscape and the coldness in the air, standing in deep awe and reverence to Mother Nature.

Winter has an absolutely beautiful feel to it, after being roasted alive by the endless summer
