From the ordinary to the extraordinary, journaling the events that take place in life creates a sense of raw power and fulfillment. Thoughts, ideas, fears, hopes, and dreams find a safe home in journals. Learn more about the benefits of opening the soul and discovering connections through writing in a journal. Try these simple steps to capture the gift of journaling.
First, consider the purpose of recording thoughts. Why choose to write and not speak when discussing daily events and encounters. Speaking does not allow people to reflect. Take time to reflect each day and record feelings, ideas, and the influence of other people.
Second, decide between a handmade and a purchased journal. Many stores, including craft and discount chains, offer simple choices. Choose lined or unlined pages. Perhaps an online journal would work well. Leave room for pictures, if desired.
Designing a journal varies according to style, taste, budget and personal needs. The basic components include paper and a backing. The backing involves a stiff piece of material, which folds in half and provides the shape of the book. Embellishments offer ideas for personalizing and these include ribbon, dried flowers, and even a DVD of personal photo to assist with reflection and journaling.
Third, begin journaling by writing a single thought. Sit quietly and reflect on the thought. Closing the eyes may help calm your other thoughts. Breathe deep and reflect on the words. Resume writing and let your soul open to new discoveries and joys.
Fourth, continue writing and remember to breathe deep. Feel the thoughts inside release as you learn from them. Consider their importance. Ask how they can help. Remain open and accepting.
Fifth, address any negative feelings or events causing trouble. Record these in detail. Listen to your mind as the words find a home in your journal. Seek new thoughts to resolve issues. Stay aware of breathing and seek peace through writing in the journal.
Upon finishing, close the journal and look for a pleasurable task. At another time on the same day, read the words in the journal. Think each one through and consider the purpose of choosing each word.
Journaling is a way to connect with other people. It allows for sharing of time and values. Future generations gain an understanding through shared words. Meaning of events and feelings begin to make sense. Resolution and change becomes clear when journaling.
A writer once shared the instruction and passion of recording thoughts for reflection. The simple goal offered battered women a chance to take control of feelings, fears, dreams, and hopes often shattered by other people. They discovered a sense of purpose and a reason for developing confidence. What a way to spend a rainy, Saturday morning!
Here is a short story to close this article and prove the power available through a journal. An older man knew he would die soon; a disease threatened his life. His wife requested to know more about his life before he died, and particularly, his childhood.
He did not have the strength to record all of his thoughts through a written journal; he could only accomplish this on good days. Therefore, he used a recorder to journal his fears, dreams, hopes, and all he learned through life. He spoke of tales from his childhood and early adult life. Soon after, he died.
His wife, while cleaning the spare bedroom and sorting his belongings, discovered the tapes and short journals. Speech could not come as her fingers flipped through each page and his voice spoke once more. She did not know how he used his final days. With tears streaming down her face, she whispered her thanks for his last gift.
