It's truely amazing how many people have overlooked this information. Only a few months ago Nirvana surpassed Elvis for record sales. Now it may be hard for most people to believe, after all not many people of the older generations have ever liked the heavier grunge era of music, but it's true. The media didn't pay much due to the fact but FOX News Channel had a little bit of the story in one of their later shows.
Obviously this does not settle the argument of "who" the best artist is in the history of rock and roll but it swings the numbers into a new light. I for one have never been a fan of "The King." I listen to the Beattles but am not an avid fan. I greatly dislike all of Paul McCartney's new "music" and his lip syncing during his Super Bowl performance a few years back was just plain disgraceful. My true number one artist is in fact Nirvana.
You could imagine my glee at hearing that they had supplanted Elvis as the top selling rock artist of all time. Now factor in the time differential between the two artists and do the math. Nirvana albums have only been sold since the late 80's while Elvis' music has been selling since the 50's. Also factor in the fact that Elvis made more records than Nirvana was able to do in it's all to short lived life. These numbers show that the popularity of Nirvana far outweighs that of Elvis and The Beattles. Though I'm sure this argument will wage on for years on end and Nirvana will continue to be ignored by the older generations in this discussion I do hope that this new factoid shines at least some of the light in the direction of Nirvana's achievements.
