Transport to Peace
How Journaling Can Enhance Your Well Being
Would you like to have more tranquility in your life? Maybe even just a simple reprieve from the complex stresses of your day? If so, then journaling is your express transport to peace. Journaling is the act of keeping a diary of thoughts and feelings. Some even use it to record the events of the day. It can be done virtually at any place and at any time, as frequently or infrequently as you desire. Journaling can be used to count your blessings or to weigh the pros and cons of a decision you are about to make. There are significant health benefits to journaling, including lower blood pressure, stress reduction, improvement of mental clarity, and mind rejuvenation. Some journal keepers even report a sense of spiritual awakening and mindfulness that they did not have prior to keeping a journal.
How to Begin Keeping a Journal
1. Select a journal and pen that you feel comfortable using. A journal can come from a book or stationery store - even a dollar store. Some people prefer spiral notebooks to journal tablets. The point is to find one that works best for you, especially if you are going to use it when traveling.
2. Write away. Take that pen and paper and run with it! Give yourself the freedom to write about what is first and foremost on your mind today. Do not concern yourself with spelling and grammar this is not a homework assignment; it is an exploration of your being!
3. Say what and how you really feel. This is your sacred place to freely express what is inside of you. Do not worry about writing something that might hurt someone's feelings. You are entitled to your feelings and must be honest with yourself. This is your private sanctum. No one will see it but you. If you are upset with a coworker or boss, get it out! Chances are releasing your frustrations on paper could save you from verbalizing something you might regret. If you are in pain from a medical condition, tell it like it is. Often times, the simple act of venting your feelings will aid in your path towards healing.
4. Use your journal to help make decisions. Making a list of all the pros and cons of a particular issue will help you see both sides if you are undecided. For instance, let us say that you received a promotion offer at work. This includes a pay raise but also means that you will have to relocate. Obviously, you would list the monetary pluses of such a proposal, but how would this be for you emotionally? Viewing everything written out for you could be immensely useful in your decision making process.
Remember, your journal is a reflection of you. There are no right or wrong ways to keep one. You can include pictures and artwork or keep it solely about your words. Giving yourself this simple oasis is going to change your life. You will have a stronger sense of self. This strength will enhance your self confidence and lead you to a more peaceful place within. The beautiful thing is that this transport to peace will always be there for you, whenever you need it. All you have to do is pick up your pen and write!
