Imagine, sitting on the beach soaking up the sun, or casting your rod and reel into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A vacation like this is closer than you think. An easy drive down the Texas coast brings you to the warm waters of South Padre Island. South Padre Island is quickly becoming a year-round destination for travelers, with its warm temperatures and abundance of activities. It offers vacationers a peek at luxury, with exclusive hotels and restaurants, while remaining close to home.

From golf and fishing tournaments, arts and crafts shows, fireworks on the bay during the summer, South Padre Island will please everyone's interests. One of the largest events on the island last year was the South Padre Island International Music Festival. Over 60 bands participated and this year organizers are expecting the festival to grow. This festival occurs over Halloween weekend. The island boosts several local musicians, which can be seen around town on various weekends.

A few attractions to check out include the Sea Turtle, Inc. This organization was founded to protect and assist the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles. At the center, an organization volunteer explains how individuals can help prevent their extinction, and visitors can view the sea turtles. Another local attraction is the Port Isabel Lighthouse, constructed in 1852. This is the only originally constructed lighthouse along the Texas coast open to the public. It provides a terrific view of South Padre Island and the beaches; picnic tables are situated on site for visitors to enjoy a relaxing lunch after the climb.

Several companies in the South Padre Island area offer fishing trips. These trips can be a few hours or several days. The options are unlimited. Or simply drop your line from one of the piers in South Padre Island. You may pull in the next 800-pound Marlin. While in South Padre Island one of the most popular attractions is the beach. With 34 miles of spectacular beaches, South Padre Island is a perfect weekend get away.

South Padre Island offers visitors exclusive resorts with beach front access and a variety of amenities. Tucked in between the surf and sand are several local dining favorites. Many feature a variety of seafood specialties. Often, the seafood is fresh from local fisherman. It is best to call ahead and check on appropriate dining attire. Some restaurants have no dress code, while others require certain attire.

South Padre Island presents visitors with an abundance of activities and things to do. It's easy to get to, just down the Texas coast, and provides guests with an average January temperature of 60 degrees. South Padre Island is the perfect location for a fun weekend get away.
