A MONSTER IN MY POCKET

It was raining pretty hard as Jamie walked home from his friend's house. He wasn't sure if he was seeing things or not when something darted across the sidewalk in front of him. No one would believe him if he told them what he thought he saw, so he decided to go in the direction it went to see for himself. He started walking, looking around very carefully. There it was! But what was it?

He was almost there, but, as he reached out to touch it, it took off again. Now he was sure, and he just had to catch it, so he ran after it again. Suddenly, there it was. But now it looked like it might be hurt, and didn't run when Jamie stooped down to pick it up. He was right it was some kind of monster, even though it was a very small monster. It was no bigger than his hand. And it was shivering.

"Hey little guy," said Jamie. "I won't hurt you. What are you anyway?"

"Not hurt Kusko?" asked the monster.

Jamie stared at the creature he held in his hand. "You you talked!" Jamie stammered in surprise. "What are you and where did you come from?" he asked.

Kusko let Jamie put him in his pocket. He snuggled right in like it was a cozy bed.

As Jamie neared his house, he decided it would be better to be quiet about Kusko because Mom and Dad had said he couldn't have a pet right now. As he came in the back door he took off his coat and hung it on the peg in the laundry room. He was going to take Kusko out of his pocket, but his mom came in and started talking to him. "You'll be alright here for a little while," Jamie whispered into his pocket.

It was about a half hour later when Jamie came back to get Kusko out of his pocket. But Kusko wasn't there! Jamie started frantically searching for his new friend when suddenly he heard a crash coming from the living room. He ran quickly into the room, only to find his Mom's favorite lamp in pieces on the floor. About that time, his mom walked in. Boy did she look angry!

"Jamie, what have you done? My lamp is ruined! Go to your room until I call you for dinner," she said in a very stern voice. As Jamie left the room, he saw Kusko by the stairs so he picked him up. "You really got me into a lot of trouble. "Now, Mom thinks I broke the lamp." Jamie couldn't
