Reflections: Staying positive

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE WORLD 04/26/08

Hello, everybody..

I woke up this morning in a different state of mind. For many, many years, I listen to the radio before I go to sleep, and turn it on in the morning as well. I listen to National Public Radio in the morning. My brain kicks in while I'm awake, I think about stuff. I think about my own situation, and I think about what's going on in the world. I listen to the news a lot; there's a lot going on in the world, and I'm regularly thinking about my relationship with the world I live in. Individually, locally, globally. My relationships with the people I know, my friends, my family, aquaintences, business relationships. People I have known who have died, again, friends, family, aquaintences, people in the news I never met, people I would like to meet, people who I will never get the chance to meet.

I am fifty two years old. In four months, I will be fifty three. Sometimes, I think I could use some kind of therapy, some counseling-some "advice", on where I'm going. I think ("I" think) we all consider our place in the world; what kind of contribution we're making, to the world. To the Universe. Most of us, anyway.

My friends, my family, even my aquaintences seem to give me feedback that I'm a "good man", I've always tried my best to be honest, forthright, helpful, intelligent (?), considerate, positive, friendly, non-threatening, open to new concepts, dependable, humorous, glib. I remain my own person, I have formed my own opinions about things. I suppose we all do that, we can only operate on what we have learned and experienced in our own lives. Certain people I know are quick to hand out "advice", but, I also realized long ago that people can only also operate upon their own set of experiences, and when they are being so generous with those experiences, what they say is also often very myopic. Not neccessairily "global", but very local, very individual to their own situation. I know a couple of people I would consider "successful", and I know more people who are "struggling" (as I am right now), and I know a couple of people who I would consider as basically "failures", whose choices in their lives have put them in difficult places. Some people (this being a very general observation, including people I know and also people in the news, people I don't even know) operate only locally, have a very small scope of awareness. They have no concept of making a "contribution" to the world,
