movie it has to be director Timur Bekmambetov. Once our young main character gets picked up by the secret assassin agency the action goes pedal to the metal and does not let up until the closing credits. This movie certainly has a few seminal moments in terms of action scenes. Even though the movie plays at realism it is very obviously a superhero movie and viewed with that same suspension of disbelief becomes much more enjoyable than if you watch it in the same mindset as you would something realistic like the first Die Hard.
There is a scene where one bullet kills everyone in a room. I will not say more but you will know the scene when you see it. To me that was a brilliant moment and there are a few others in this movie. I even liked the way the ending inverted everything that had come before. The twist ending is completely absurd upon analysis but I certainly respect its audacity.
And that is pretty much where I am left with the entire film. I admire its willingness to go over the top and back again but think it was missing the plot to sustain such spirit. I think its ambition exceeded its imagination and in the end I was left with an interesting though empty experience. I give it two and a half stars out of four, though to be honest I could see adding or subtracting a half star based on my mood when seeing it. If you can check your brain at the door and wash your memories of movies like The Matrix clean for a few hours, you should have a good time.
