A yeast infection can be one of the most irritating conditions a person can experience. It is that itch you cannot scratch, and a woman is put in a very ucomfortable position.
An overgrowth of candida albicans are the culprit. Candida usually lives in the vagina and the mouth, as well as the intestines. When it explodes the itching and misery begins.
Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include a thick white discharge, itching, redness, and painful intercourse. There are over the counter creams and vaginal suppositories that can be very helpful in fighting an infection. Eating yogurt and taking probiotics can also help. Taking antibiotics can aggravate, or even cause the situation. If the infections are frequent and recurrent talk to your doctor because there could be a serious condition causing them. These include HIV, diabetes, or pregnancy. Then again you might just need a prescription strength yeast fighter. This could be a high strength angi fungal cream, or a pill you can swallow.
Men are not to be excluded. They can develop a yeast infection, as well. Symptoms include redness and itching of the genital area. Anti-fungal creams, or a prescription from the doctor will clear this right up. Jock itch is a form of yeast in men. Having sexual intercourse can spread it back and forth from partner to partner. Be careful when treating this. Use condoms or abstain for a few days.
Children can develop yeast infections too. Look for a red rash and a white coating. An antifungual cream helps, but always have a child looked at by a doctor. Most of the time their pediatrician will give a prescription. It is always safe to have them looked at after a round of antibiotics just to be safe. They do not uderstand what is going on and cannot tell you.
Overgrowth of candida in the mouth can cause thrush. A white coating of the mouth and tongue is generally a warning sign. There can also be red patchy spots. This can also be caused by use of inhalers and not rinsing after, or in people with cancer. Children also develop thrush quite often. A prescription rinse from the doctor will be necessary to help get rid of this condition. They might prescribe an antifungal tablet also.
If you are not sure a yeast problem is what you have just remember "when in doubt, go to the doctor to figure it out."
