A VPS is usually accessed by SSH and SFTP. These technologies allow you to connect to your VPS from your home computer and give you access via a command line (ssh) or a file browser (sftp). With ssh you can install and set up software on your VPS, although you will need knowledge of setting up a server from the command line. With SFTP you can access the files on your VPS and work with them just as if they were in a folder on your home computer.

Because you have full access to install and set up software on your VPS, you can choose to run whatever you need, and are free of the limitations of hosting accounts. You can host multiple websites, set up a mail server, your own DNS server, choose which web server to run, try out different database programs, uninstall unneeded programs, change the configurations of your web server or php setup or anything else that is running. You have complete control.

A VPS is not a sensible choice for people who don't know how to and don't want to learn how to set up and manage their own server. It is however a great option for those who want control over their software, those who want to learn to set up and maintain their own server, and those who want to host several websites.
