Prom is fast approaching, and classy guy (or girl) that you are, you've decided to buy your date some flowers. If you want to make sure that this gesture is well appreciated you better get it right; because let's face it, getting bad flowers is worse than getting no flowers at all.
Here's the first step: find out what color or colors your date's outfit is, it is important that the flowers you get compliment your date's look as opposed to working against it, or clashing. Due to increased demand flowers are now available in every color imaginable, they have even created genetically engineered brown roses, so there are no excuses for getting the wrong color. Now you need to decide what kind of arrangement you will be getting. The classic prom options are corsages that either are pinned to your date's clothing or are worn as a bracelet. Also, there has been an emerging trend in the floral industry towards creating temporary rings adorned by a single large flower, or a cluster of small flowers. Personally, I find this last option most appealing as it is fresh and different yet still maintains a classic style. The decision of which arrangement to choose will again depend on your date's outfit, if he/she has an embellished neckline or lapels you should opt for the bracelet or ring so that the flowers do not compete with the neckline. However, if he/she has a simpler neckline, or if they are planning on wearing a particular bracelet or ring the pinned corsage is the appropriate choice. If you are buying flowers for a man then the most masculine option is the boutonniere, which is the male equivalent of the pinned corsage.
Once you have decided on the color (or colors) and type of arrangement you want you need to decide how much you are willing to spend; depending on your geographical location a nice corsage can range from $15 to $45 depending on what flowers you choose. Most local flower shops are well aware of the time when prom approaches and prepare adequately. The right florist will listen to your requirements and also make suggestions to improve on your original ideas and work within your budget. A good florist will also know to keep sizing and weight down to a minimum in order to make the flowers as wearable as possible. When placing any order with a florist the earlier before the event the better, this holds true for placing your prom order too.
Your date receiving the flowers you have purchased for the occasion can be an awkward moment, or when he/she receives flowers that you carefully selected it will set the tone for the evening, and will be remembered as a beautiful gesture in years to come whenever your date views your prom pictures. This is the time to impress your date, and getting the right flowers is a surefire way to do it!
