Straightening curly, frizzy hair can certainly seem like a workout! I myself have been straightening my curls for nearly 8 years, and I can tell you, it does get easier with practice. Also, as you go along, you'll find out which products and techniques work the best for you. But here's my own personal how-to, and links for more ideas and products.
1. Start with clean, damp hair. You'll want to let your hair dry a little bit before you begin, otherwise it will take you forever to blow dry each section. Once it's stopped dripping, apply your choice of frizz-minimizing products. I use mousse, but a little gel can work too. Also check out the links at the end of the article for more products made specifically for straightening hair.
2. Divide your hair into four sections by parting down the middle from front to very back, and side to side from the tops of your ears. Use clips to keep each section out of the way.
3. Begin with one of the bottom sections. You'll need to take even smaller sections from this (about 2 inches wide is usually good, but don't make it too thick-try for about 1/4 of an inch thick). Comb it out, holding on to the ends and keeping tension on it.
4. Blow dry the smaller section from roots to ends, making sure the roots are completely dry. Once you reach the ends, it's a good idea to use a round metal brush to dry them. Do this by placing the barrel of the brush about halfway up the section, underneath. Then comb downwards, wrapping the ends tightly around the brush. Blow dry.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4, working your way through all of your hair.
6. (Optional) Once finished drying, your hair should be straight, if not completely smooth. If you live in a very humid area, or if you simply want flatter, smoother hair, continue with this step: Use a straightening iron and go over each section of hair, again taking pieces about 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. This will help to tame down any tiny curls you may have missed, and give your hair more shine. If you need extra assurance of your hair staying put throughout the day, try spritzing a bit of hair spray or thermal protection spray into your hair before you use the straightening iron.
7. Style it however you like! Curl the ends under, or leave it the way it is-do what you want and have fun with it!
