We embraced
for the third (or fourth) time that morning.
Something was there
that hadn't been before,
and it hung between us in the cold, wet air
waiting to be addressed.
Only five days ago we'd met,
but it was long enough
to be missing him already.
He pulled me in close,
wrapping his arms around me
and refusing to let go.
And I let the action
say what both of us feared mentioning.
The rest of the world
froze for me
as my heart faltered.
No longer did we care
what others thought.
My best friend stared
and no doubt others did as well.
But he just held me tighter.
And, lost in his arms,
I felt safe.

I knew you were still

Her eyes are red and puffy
Body shaking;
