How to keep your New Year's resolutions

Among the shouts and whistles, the confetti and midnight kisses, resolutions are made.

Do you find yourself unable to keep those brash resolutions you shout out after the final gong on New Years? Or, are you like so many of those that don't make resolutions, knowing that they can't possibly keep the rash promise made among their peers? Some go so far as to say, "I resolve to make no resolutions this year!"

Here are a few of the most popular resolutions and reasons why they most likely fail and how you can redeem these resolutions and succeed:

1. "I WILL WORK OUT AT THE GYM THIS YEAR MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY!"
The reason this fails most times is that the person adds on an unreasonable amount of time spent at said gym. Instead of planning to immediately work out an hour a day, five days a week as of January 2, be more realistic. Chances are that if you are resolving to return to the gym, you'll need to build up your level of aerobic exercise as well as your time in the gym. Start by going one day a week for a half-hour to an hour. After doing this for a few weeks, you can begin adding days and time to your workout. Also, remember to jazz it up. Take an iPod or Walkman with you when you work out so you can get in shape with your favorite tunes. Also, don't do the same exercises every time. Take a few classes, try the bikes or walk the track, play basketball or racquetball, whatever tickles your fancy that day. Variety will keep the enjoyment of attending the gym fresh. Also, find a workout buddy, someone that can attend the gym with you, even if it's not every time you go. Taking a friend along keeps one encouraged and on the right track.

2. "I WILL NOT EAT ANYMORE SWEETS OR FATTY FOODS."
While this resolution is all well in good in theory, it is such a broad category that the minute you give in' to that Little Debbie treat or McDonald's cheeseburger, you consider the resolution a bust and decide to abolish any attempts at healthy eatingat least until swimsuit and shorts season arrives. Instead of leaving the resolution open for negotiation, pick some foods that you truly want to stop indulging in. "I will not eat anymore Little Debbie snacks" or "I will not eat McDonald's fries" or "I will not drink sodas that have caffeine". By making the item you are giving up specific, it makes it easier for you to stick to this resolution. You can still have the birthday cake at the office party or the Sprite with your cheeseburger at McDonald's, which makes it feel less like a restriction
