Yeast infections, also known as Moniliasis, Candidiasis or thrush are caused by a large group of yeast-like fungae.
In men the infection can affect the penis, the urethral canal, prostate gland and oral cavity. With the exception of oral thrush, few symptoms are exhibited, often leading to delayed prostate problems and even cancer.
In women the infection can be present in the vagina, vulva and oral cavity. The vaginal form exhibits such symptoms as itching, burning, pain during intercourse or urination, and a thick, white discharge with a fishy or yeasty odor.
Over the counter treatments are available. If they fail to eliminate the condition you will have delayed proper medical diagnosis of more serious conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, Chlamydia or gonnorhea.
Thrush is an oral infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans. It may occur in young children and the elderly of both sexes. Indications are redness and soreness of oral tissue, smooth creamy white coating, red, peeling patches on palate and tongue, or cracks at the corners of the mouth.
A visit to a physician is recommended especially if the patient is pregnant. Recurrent yeast infections can indicate other medical conditions or an infected sexual partner who shows no symptoms. Alternative causes may be the use of birth control pills or treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics, indulgence in beer or wheat products.
The physician will confirm his diagnosis by taking a swab for microscopic examination or laboratory culture in order to identify the fungus and/or eliminate other organisms as the culprits.
Oral tablets or vaginal suppositories and topical creams are available. Bear in mind that many creams and suppositories used to treat yeast infection are oil-based and will weaken rubber condoms or diaphragms used for birth control. Most physicians prescribe vaginal tablets for women as they bypass side effects of the oral form such as headache and nausea.
Natural and homeopathic remedies are also available. Taking lacto bacillus acidophilus is not a cure but it can aid in recovery from a yeast infection.
