TRICHOMONIASIS is a sexually transmitted disease. Trichomoniasis affects both men and women although women are most affected. Trichomoniasis is the most common STD in young, sexually active men and women. Trichomoniasis is curable.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men are,
irritation inside the penis
mild discharge
slight burning after urination or ejaculation

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women can include,

greenish-yellow discharge with a strong odor
painful urination
itching and irritation
discomfort during intercourse
symptoms usually occur five to 28 days after exposure.

A doctor will perform a physical examination and do laboratory test to look for the disease-causing parasite. The parasite is harder to detect in men than it is in women. You should let your doctor know if you are pregnant since the medication for Trichomoniasis could harm the baby.

Trichomoniasis can not be treated with over the counter medications used to treat yeast infections, usually an oral antibiotic called metronidazole. Metronidazole may be taken by mouth in a 250 mg pill to be taken two times a day for seven days or in a single dose of one 2g pill, depending on your doctor. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps are some side effects of Metronidazole. Both partners should be tested and treated at the same time. Sexual activities should be avoided until infection has been treated and no symptoms remain. To be effective, antibiotics need to be taken as directed. If treatment is not competed, the infection may not be cured. Some health professionals suggest being tested again in 3 to 12 months. Anyone who has tested positive for Trichomoniasis and their sex partner for the last 60 days should be treated, even if they have no symptoms.

Some ways to help prevent Trichomoniasis infection are,
use condoms correctly every time you have sex.
Limit the number sex of partners, and do not go back and forth between partners.
Practice sexual abstinence, or limit sexual contact to one uninfected partner.
If you think you are infected, avoid sexual contact, and see a doctor.

Any genital symptoms such as discharge or burning during urination, or an unusual sore or rash is a signal to see your doctor.
