Costs of a gambling lifestyle

Gambling is prevalent across several different cultures. The Chinese love it, as do the Greeks. Perhaps gambling is so popular because it imitates life, since we have to take risks in order to achieve our objectives. Here in the US many see a visit to a casino or booking shop as a harmless means of entertainment. However, is gambling really such a benign venture?

Some people gamble professionally and make a great deal of money from it. This leads some foolish individuals who are in need of extra cash to believe that they are capable of developing a scheme in which they are guaranteed to beat the system and make themselves a fortune. In some cases, such individuals are proved right. However, more often than not those who attempt to make a quick fortune on the roulette tables or at the booking shop end up being financially worse off than they were before. Some may even end up destitute.

While in my early twenties, I spent a year working as a croupier in a casino. Some of the casino's customers visited the establishment on a daily basis. They were there soon after the doors opened and left only when it closed. For people such as these customers gambling had become more than a harmless pastime. It had become an obsession, which consumed their every waking moment. Many of these customers had lost their life savings. They had also lost their homes and families. The grip of the addiction had them in its iron grasp. Gambling had ruined their lives.

In truth, gamblers feel a powerful rush when they are winning money. It compels them to keep going until there is nothing left in their pockets, instead of quitting and cashing in the chips while they are ahead. Greed is a very powerful motivator. Many gamblers fall into the trap of telling themselves that they will quit when they have won just another two or three hundred dollars. This mentality keeps casinos and booking shops in business.

The odds are always in favor of the casino or booking shop. The laws of probability guarantee it. Furthermore, the croupiers in casinos are very well trained. During a game of roulette, the croupier can easily modify the way they spin the wheel in order to benefit both themselves and the casino. For example, if most customers have placed their chips on the zero section of the table then the croupier will adapt the speed of the wheel or the ball in order to ensure that the ball lands in the opposite section of the wheel. In this way, they avoid making a big pay out. This is obviously good for the casino but it also benefits the croupier not to have to make massive mental calculations in order to pay the customers their due.

My advice is to refrain from gambling altogether, it really is a game for losers. However if you must visit a casino then stay away from the roulette tables. If you really cannot resist the roulette tables then only place a small number of chips in the opposite area of the table to the other customers. Finally, the most important thing to remember is to quit while you are ahead. If you win fifty dollars, then do yourself a favor: cash in your chips and go home.
