Symptoms and treatment of genital crabs

Genital crabs or pubic lice are a sexually transmitted disease or more aptly, an infection. It is a more common form of STD and is completely curable with treatment. These parasitic lice feed off your blood and attach themselves to the coarse hairs generally in the pubic region but they can also migrate to armpits and eyebrows as well.

Transmission:
Genital Crabs are easily transmitted between sexual partners. Any close contact of the genital area with an infected person can result in a spread of the infection. They can also be transmitted through the bedding, towels and clothing of an infected person but the chances are slim as crabs can only live 48 hours without blood.

Symptoms:
Extreme itching and irritation of the genital areas. Upon inspection you may see the lice crawling through the hair and eggs at the base of the hair shaft. You may also see bluish tinged areas at the site where the crabs have been feeding.

Treatment:
Over the counter shampoos or medications are available in your local pharmacy. Shampoos for common head lice will also kill genital crabs. In extreme cases, shaving the infected area should also be considered. Special prescribed lotions can be obtained if infestation has spread to eyebrows or eyelashes that is safe to use for your eyes. Sprays are also available over the counter to treat bedding and furniture as an extra precaution. Seek professional medical attention immediately if symptoms persist or if any discharge of the genital area is detected.

Prevention:
Practice good hygiene and avoid sharing bedding, towels or clothing with others. Practice safe sex and know your partners.

There are more than 3 million reported cases of genital crabs in the United States every year. If you are having sex then you are at risk for this infection. However, this STD is curable and preventable when treated with caution and safe sexual practices.
