Reflections: Is industrial civilization killing the planet?

by James Gatz

Created on: July 11, 2008

Arrogance: an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.

Firstly I guess I would be curious to know how it is presumptuous to assume that society cannot kill the planet.

Loggers remove trees at a rapid rate without being replaced proportionately. Industries have decimated lakes, rivers with their poor means of waste control and manifest loopholes around environmental protections so as not to slow down there productions.

More people prefer owning luxury rather than fuel efficient vehicles, which in turn produces fumes into the air and causing rain water to be filled with toxins which eventually return to the earth and in turn pollute the plants, animals, and water life.

But what does it matter. We can have brisk cars, television's, microwave ovens, cellular telephones, etc.etc...

Because what would we do without these "things" in the world. My goodness without my Ford Truck that I have no use for other than throwing a tool box back there to feel handy, what would I do. Television's, if I did not have that I would miss the ever life changing mtv's " The Real World." And if I did not have my cellular telephone I would have missed that meaningless call about 'what's up.' Never mind authoring letters, that is a misspend of time. Who cares how little effort goes into an email or even better a text message. I don't care enough to think about it so I will just type some blather on my little contraption.

Societies life is full of necessary unnecessary items to make our every day lives easier. And all that is at expense is the world around us. It is true that this planet has survived billions of years. Survived many natural catastrophe's.

But wait am I forgetting something. Oh yes that was without human intervention. I mean if two World Wars, Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam and so on could happen why not the obliteration of the planet. It obviously could not because society knows exactly what there doing don't they. Don't they?

A response might be that we have survived these and whats to say we wont continue to survive in the future. We have learned and adapted to prevent incidents from progressively getting worse. And my retort is that someday diplomacy will not factor. Eventually reason will not apply. More and more as time goes by we are as a people becoming divided. History has shown that division of opinion will lead to war, and rather than learning from these mistakes we continue to follow that path rather
