Understanding fibromyalgia

Recommended Fibromyalgia Diet

I do not believe in dieting; rather I believe in eating healthy food. After being diagnosed in November 1996 with Fibromyalgia, I changed my eating patterns and this is how I eat now after much study and research. I have been 100% pain-free since 4 June 1998.

Never deny yourself everything you love to eat. Even if it is not good for you, have a bit once in a while if you crave it. Do not make meal time a time of deprivation. You should eat something every three hours. I cannot stress this too strongly. Here are my suggestions for healthy eating for people with fibromyalgia.

Meat

- 8 ounces per day is plenty for a man and 4 ounces for a woman.

- Red meat, well chewed or already ground. Avoid pork and especially avoid all
processed meats. Avoid the greasy spoon restaurants, and especially deep-fried
foods.

- Chicken and fish are best. Try for broiled or oven-cooked rather than fried.

Eggs

- If you believe the scare about cholesterol (I don't), you will avoid eggs. If you do eat them, try for poached or boiled.

Dairy

- Avoid dairy products - including milk, fruit-sweetened yogurt, sour cream, cream, processed cheeses, natural cheeses. No cream sauces ever, which means no creamed soups.

- Natural yogurt is good for building good bacteria in your intestinal tract. Try to eat plain yogurt every day.

- Always eat butter (in moderation) rather than margarine.

- You may be able to eat small amounts of Old Cheddar Cheese.

- Soy milk and brown rice milk are excellent cow milk replacements.

Grains & Pastas

- Eat brown or white rice, spaghetti, macaroni, buckwheat, millet, etc.

Cereals

- Any cooked cereal, particularly old fashioned oatmeal, is very good for you.

- Also cold cereals such as raisin bran, bran flakes, granola, oat bran, corns flakes, puffed wheat, puffed rice, shredded wheat and the like. Choose the ones with the most fiber as you are aiming for 30 to 50 grams of fiber daily.

Breads

- Breads are good for you, but yeast is very bad for you. Also white flour products are bad for you because the white flour has usually been bleached with chlorine. (Chlorine kills off our good bacteria.) So avoid breads made with white flour and stay away from any product that contains yeast.

(Note - 90% of Campbells soups contain yeast. Avoid them.)

- Baked goods like bran muffins and tea biscuits do not contain yeast, so eat them
instead of breads. (However, they usually contain milk, which is not good for you.) Rice cakes are handy substitutes for bread.
