Vaginal Yeast Infections are caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans. A healthy vagina has many bacteria. When something happens to upset the balance, yeast can grow and cause symptoms. Taking antibiotics can sometimes cause this imbalance. High estrogen levels during pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy can also cause vaginal yeast infections.
The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection can include, pain or burning when you urinate. Some women have an odorless white discharge that looks like cottage cheese. If this is the first time you have had these symptoms, see your doctor. He may want to do a pelvic exam to confirm that you have a yeast infection. If you have had a yeast infection before and recognize the symptoms and you aren't pregnant, you can treat yourself at home with over the counter medications.
Medication for yeast infection comes in antifungal creams or in suppositories that you place into your vagina. Miconazole, brand name Monistat is an antifungal used to treat vaginal yeast infections. Monistat comes in cream or suppository. Side effects might include, burning, itching, and pelvic cramps. Butoconazole, brand name Femstat also comes in cream or suppository. vaginal antifungal medications are available without a prescription. Do not use nonprescription vaginal infection treatment without your doctors advice if you are pregnant. If you use a cream or suppository to treat the infection, don't depend on a condom or diaphragm for birth control. Tampons can absorb medication, use sanitary napkins if you are being treated with vaginal medications during your period.
You can help prevent vaginal yeast infections by making sure that your genital area stays as dry as possible. Wear cotton underwear. Change out of a wet swim suit right away. Avoid douches and feminine sprays and scented toilet paper.
