The use of Arabian horses throughout history

the land, new "hybrid" breeds were established and refined. The results of these early crosses are the diverse and numerous horse breeds we see today. The Bedouins, on the other hand, saw no need to taint the blood of their precious desert beauties with other types. They followed strict breeding regimes to keep their Arabian stock as pure as their wild ancestors, and this practice is still followed today, monitored closely by Arabian horse societies around the world.

During the eleventh century, heavy battle armour gave way to a lighter, faster approach to warfare. The light cavalry, which carried through to the early twentieth century, had its beginnings in this era, creating a further need for the infusion of pure Arabian bloodlines. The heavier part Arabian breeds that had carried the enormous weight of full armour were bred back to pure Arabians to produce lightning quick, agile mounts for a new generation of soldiers.

The demand for quality purebreds led to the formation of stud farms across Europe, dedicated to the preservation of this most treasured breed. Large numbers of desert bred horses were imported from the Middle East, and their bloodlines meticulously recorded into the studbooks that would form the foundations for all future breeding programs to build on. The Arabian horse had proven its worth, and was now guaranteed to live on as the purest horse breed on earth.

The days of galloping off to war on horseback are long gone, but the bold and versatile Arabian is now firmly entrenched in every area of today's equestrian circles. Arabian racing has gained huge worldwide popularity and is set to become as lucrative a sport as thoroughbred racing. Endurance riding is dominated by this amazing horse with its incredible stamina and willingness to please. When treated with kindness and respect, the Arabian will excel at anything that is asked of it.

History shows us that the Arabian horse, as beautiful and enchanting as it is, is so much more than just a pretty show pony. This is a horse that will give until it has nothing left, and then give some more.
