co-captain. He's a jerk,"he said untruthfully.
"Is he? Why?" she asked curiously as she looked back at Tom and saw to her astonishment he continued to stare after them.
"He's a wild one. Got no parents or they're hardly around or something. Gets into all sorts of trouble,"Sam replied casually.
"That's sad if he's got no one to care for him. But how does that make him a jerk?"
He cursed himself for provoking her sentiments but rallied immediately and he hoped, spectacularly."Got a different girl every other day. Treats them like tissues," he said swiftly. He was just repeating the rumors about school. Whether they were true or not was hardly his concern. He'd say anything to make Tom bad in Ashley's eyes. "He'll probably take Veronica home tonight. She's hot for him. That makes him a jerk, doesn't it?"
"I suppose, but then why are you friends with him?"she asked innocently.
"You know what they say, you can't pick your teammates," he said flippantly.
"Silly goose! That's relatives," she said laughing up at him.
"Oh, yeah, that too," he retorted hugging her closer and kissing her, this time making contact where he wanted.
"Sammy, please," she said pulling back.
"So, did you see me get that three pointer?" Sam asked, hurriedly changing the subject.
Thankfully, at lunch the next day everything was back to normal. Grateful that Tom had no classes with Ashley Sam felt safe she would still be his. Ashley was right beside him while he and his friends talked over the finer points of the game. He couldn't have been happier until he saw Ashley staring across the room at Tom and Tom, though he had two girls sitting on either side of him, staring right back. Sam wanted to get up and slam his fist into Tom's pretty face. Instead he turned her face towards him.
"So, what do you think, Ashley?" Sam asked anxiously.
"Huh?"
"The party. We should go, don't you think?"he replied excitedly.
"What party?"she asked stupidly.
He grinded his back teeth a second before he calmly said, " Frankie's parents are going away for the weekend. All the guys will be there."
She frowned. "Me with a bunch of your friends, no doubt getting drunk? Oh, yeah, my dad will love that!" she said sarcastically.
"He knows you're with me and that I'll let nothing happen to you. You're my girl, after all," he said putting his arm around her suddenly. This time catching her sufficiently off guard, he planted a kiss smack-dab on her mouth, determined to get a response. He got one all right just not one he wanted.
She turned away

"Why won't she love me?" he muttered to himself. Sam watched her from across the gym floor after having showered and dressed.
