but he wasn't worried. She'd come around. He just knew it.
Three weeks later and still nothing but that stiff, nervous little smile and very reluctant kisses if any. Determined, he brushed that little fact aside. For now he would love enough for the both of them. Soon, real soon she would succumb to his charms.
He ignored that she had very reluctantly agreed to go out with him. Some would say he forced her. He wouldn't listen to those idiots. They knew nothing. For now he had Ashley. That's all that mattered. Besides, Ashley must love him a little. She hated sports and yet she came to his games regularly even the away games.
"So, did you watch the game?" Sam asked eagerly after climbing two steps from the top so they were just eye-level.
She hurriedly closed her book bag and guiltily looked up at him. "Of course I did. Did you think I sat here all game reading a book or something?"she retorted indignantly.
He smirked knowing in fact, that was exactly what she had done. Thrilled not so much with their victory but just because he was with her he said nothing. She stood up and was about to hitch her book bag onto her shoulder when he grabbed it out of her hand, tossed it onto his own then snatched up her hand. He pulled her towards him for a congratulatory kiss but she turned her head making his lips land on her cheek.
Suppressing a sigh he whispered in her ear, "I love you, Ashley."
"We should go," she mumbled pulling away and starting down the steps.
Dejectedly, Sam pulled her through the milling crowd and out the gym doors where his team stood basking in the glow of victory surrounded by drooling girls.
Upon seeing him, Leslie came up to him beaming, threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. "Great game, Sam. You were awesome," she gushed, completely ignoring Ashley wide-eyed gaze.
"Thanks, Leslie," Sam said sheepishly, fleetingly wondering why Ashley couldn't be like one of those girls.
As this thought entered his head, his teammate Tom Worbok, glanced at them and did a double take. He gaped at Ashley, mouth hanging open, his dark, brooding eyes nearly out of their sockets.
"Good game, Tom. See you at practice tomorrow," Sam said stoically, possessively putting an arm around his Ashley and steering her quickly and decisively away. He saw the way Tom looked at her and didn't like it one bit. He didn't want his Ashley anywhere near Tom the stud nor any other guy for that matter.
"Who is that guy? Why did he look at me like that?" Ashley said slightly baffled.
"Tom Worbok,

"Why won't she love me?" he muttered to himself. Sam watched her from across the gym floor after having showered and dressed.
