Short stories: Unrequited love

"Why won't she love me?" he muttered to himself. Sam watched her from across the gym floor after having showered and dressed. The game, or rather the slaughter, was over and there was his angel, Ashley with her nose as usual in a book sitting on the uppermost bleacher. He loved her, worshiped her really, with every cell of his being. So, why couldn't she love him the same? Isn't that the way it was supposed to be? The one you love should love you. She knew as well as he that no two other people were ever so in sync as they obviously were. So why, why wouldn't she love him?

She turned a page and caught sight of him. She smiled nervously and waved. He wistfully smiled back crossing the length of the court and noting with displeasure that her smile seemed different now. It had always been carefree and genuine but now it was forced, and had been for weeks. He knew why and he wasn't too keen on examining it closer. It spelled doom for him and his plans.

It had been a simple plan and if she would only cooperate and fall madly in love with him all would be fine. If she could just forget all this "staying just friends" business.

"Come on, Ashley, just go out with me and you'll see," he said coaxingly.

"It'll ruin our friendship and that's more valuable to me than a boyfriend," she said steadfastly.

"Friendship is highly overrated," he countered. "I'll be the best boyfriend ever. I'll never leave your side, stuck like glue. You'll be mine forever and I'll be all yours. I'll never look at another girl."

She rolled her eyes. "Is that your idea of a perfect boyfriend? All the more reason for me never to get one. Who wants to be owned? Not me."

"We belong together," he argued.

"We are always together anyway so why do we have to change things? I don't want to ruin..."

"It won't ruin anything. It'll be better. If things don't work out we'll still be friends just let's try it, please?" he pleaded, giving her his most sad puppy dog face which he knew she could never resist.

"Sammy," she moaned wearily.

He knew she'd give in then with just one more push."Best friends make the best lovers, my mom always says," he stated adamantly.

"All right all ready, I'm your girlfriend. Now what? Has the world changed? Is there world peace now?" she said partly angry but mostly exasperated.

He grinned and kissed her right on the lips. Shocked, she stiffened and tried to push him away but he was too strong. He tried to coax some response from her but nothing. He might as well have been kissing a statue
