As someone who hopes to work in the fashion industry eating disorders are something that have always been so bittersweet to me. The health risks are immense, and it may not seem worth it, but to some it is the dark side to their glamorous life. So why would someone so beautiful and so thin already turn to something so drastic to become "prettier?" Many people are blaming the fashion industry, but they only really play a minute part in the whole problem. If a girl was not willing to stick her fingers down her throat, or eat nothing but lettuce for weeks, she would not do it. No matter how badly they might want to achieve their dream, if they did not want to expose themselves to these problems, they wouldn't. Life is full of decisions, and of course people opinions can be swayed but in order for an eating disorder to evolve, the person must have already considered it and kept the thought in the back of their mind. Another problem with the publics view on eating disorders is that most people don't realize how many different varieties, and how common it truly is. It ranges from not eating anything to overeating. When eating disorders are put down usually only not eating enough is discussed, and overeating is left out. More than half of the population is obese, yet all the focus is on the few who are underweight. I think that healthy lifestyles should be promoted, but in the end everyone should make their own decision and if they need to lose those 5 impossible pounds by a drastic mean to feel better, then they should do what they feel is right even though the rest of the world might not understand. The problem with eating disorders is when they become an obsession, if someone skips a meal once or twice, or ignores their hunger instead of eating a few snacks it isn't going to harm them. When it becomes an everyday thing is when it needs to be treated; the occasional skipped meal shouldn't lead people to intervening, but when things get more serious they need to be treated.
