of the new bans. Businesses across the country have complained that they will lose business if they have to tell customers that they cannot smoke.
Many smokers, and some non-smokers alike, have cried that it is just one more step towards fascism and the government taking away American's rights. However, blaming the government is a gross error on anyone's part. If anything, smokers should be directing their outrage towards the people. The people that voted for the smoking bans are the cause for the smoking bans. If anything, smokers should blame the state government for enacting the resolve of the majority.
Of course if smokers disagree with the mounting evidence that first and second hand smoking is harmful to health, they have every right to voice their opinion. However, the evidence has been so overwhelming that much of the public realizes that public smoking bans are a necessary first step in protecting their own health.
We, the people, elect representatives to represent our interests. We, the people, vote for the laws we want to enact. If we, the people, are unhappy about certain laws or certain state governments then we should be willing to take the steps necessary to educate ourselves and others about what we believe is right and who we believe will represent our best interests. If a person believes our representative democracy is broken, then the most likely cause of that fracture is we, the people.
In the words of J.F.K. "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."
