Album reviews: Wish You Were Here, by Pink Floyd

By 1975, Pink Floyd's popularity was reaching a feverish pitch, and rightfully so. Recorded at Abbey Road Lane Studios, Roger Waters, David Gilmore, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason emerged after seven months with their seventh, and possibly best album Wish You Were Here. Unlike many other earlier albums by Floyd, Wish You Were Here explored new avenues of musical prowess, which attributed to it reaching the top rank on the billboard charts both in the UK and the United States.

Both Roger Waters and David Gilmore claim that Wish You Were Here was one of Floyd's greatest albums, despite their ability to get along. With famous tracks like Shine on You Crazy Diamond, and Wish You Were Here, the album had several singles that reached epic proportion across the music industry. Overall several rock stations like Germany based rock station, dubbed Wish You Were Here #1 best rock album of all time. Rolling Stone ranked the same album #209 out of 500 other contenders.

The album has many great tracks to listen too, and quite honestly it is an album that can be played from start to finish without the need to skip an unwanted song. Roger Water's outpouring emotions can be haunting, and the guitar work by David Gilmore is another reason why David Gilmore has been revered in the musical community. Like other Floyd albums, Floyd uses eccentric mixing techniques achieving sounds that were way ahead of their time.

Have a Cigar remains a favorite track among many, with thick bluesy undertones, riveting keyboards, and Rogers unique vocal styling. The nature of Pink Floyd has never been a fluffy rock and roll band, instead they were always particular to making a statement, both political and human nature at heart.

Welcome to the Machine is the second track on the first side and could be one of the best songs to crank beyond the level of nine. The strange sounds on the opening have an almost aural feel, and as the thick dark distortion of David's guitar kicks in, it takes the whole thing to another level. The subject matter is another reason why I love Floyd, since it contends with humanity and technology and the battle waging between them.

The first track Shine On You Crazy Diamond has many different meanings to most, but to Pink Floyd it is a personal homage to their previous member Syd Barrett. Syd, founding member was a unique kindred spirit to the Floyd, and as the story goes; During the recording session, Syd showed up at Abbey Lane, and tears were shed as the members were recording
