Leaving a job can be a difficult decision. Many surveys and polls have been dedicated to the top reasons that people move on from their current jobs. Each person has to consider the strengths and weaknesses of their current position in relation to their goals in life. How can you tell that it may be time to leave your current job? These seven common factors go into many decisions to seek new employment.
Room to Grow
One reason to leave your current job would be that there is no room for advancement. Particularly if you are working for a small company with low turnover, there may be little room to grow or develop. Sometimes, people outgrow their current position and need to look for something more stimulating.
Finding Enjoyment
You find more enjoyment in a different line of work. There is no reason that going to work has to be a miserable experience. Think about your hobbies and passions, and consider ways to turn them into full time employment. You may just find that there is a job out there that allows you to have fun and support yourself.
Educational Goals
Another good reason to leave your current job would be to continue your education. While there are many universities which offer night classes for students who want to learn while maintaining full time employment, it might be difficult to balance two large responsibilities. Looking for a job with more convenient hours to accommodate a school schedule could help you succeed at your education.
Financial Gain
A more lucrative position opening in another firm could be a reason to leave your current job. If the new position is something that you would enjoy just as much, financial reasons may help make the decision. However, it could also provide a point of negotiation for improving your salary or benefits at your current job.
Poor Coworker Relationships
Your relationship with your boss or coworkers leaves something to be desired. While you do not have to become friends or get along personally to be successful coworkers, stress can arise if you have poor relationships with the people around you. Whether it is an overbearing boss, a gossipy coworker, or another negative person, the situation is cause for soul searching. Sometimes, office tension can prove too much. If you believe that you have done everything in your power to remedy the problem, it may be time to consider a move.
Stress
The stress of a difficult job can begin to affect the mental or physical health of an employee. There is no reason to allow yourself to become sick over work. If you regularly find yourself anxious, burnt out, or ill, you may need to consider looking for an alternative that would be fun as well as a productive contribution to society.
Relocating
Many people find themselves looking for a new job because they need to relocate, especially for family reasons. If your spouse is offered a wonderful opportunity in another city, for example, the two of you may decide to move. This is a noble gift, and can give you the chance to begin fresh if you so desire.
Whatever your reason may be for finding a new job, make sure to think the decision through and leave on good terms. There is no reason to burn a bridge to good contacts and references when you leave an old place of employment. Leaving your current job is a big decision. Make sure you understand your reasons before you make the change.
