Let us be frank here, life is one long opportunity, and the joyous thing about it is that the opportunities that life provides come along on a regular, if not daily basis. It's a charmed circle, happy and successful people attract others, and by attracting others comes more happiness, more success and more opportunities.
There is a book written by a radio producer, Danny Wallace called the "Yes Man" who, realised that his life was in a dead-end and he was invited nowhere. Then he realised that this is because he kept saying "no" when people asked him places instead of "yes".
Therefore, for a limited period of time, Danny decided to say "yes" to everything he was asked and agree that came his way. This ranged from the door-opening to the truly terrifying, e.g. when someone in a nightclub asked him if he was looking at his girlfriend. Mandated answer "yes", outcome punch in the face! The overall outcome was that he made friends he would never have done, went places he wouldn't have dreamt of and accidently got a promotion at work!
Extreme though this may be, Wallace is correct in the fact that you cannot allow your life to become a rut. Going to work a different way each day, taking the opportunities to have conversations with people on the bus or train, saying yes to events you think might be outside your comfort zone are all learning experiences, and almost certainly will attract new people to you and new opportunities.
Now the trick comes in deciding which opportunities and people to stay attractive to, and which are not going to create positive outcomes for you and move on. It is a bit like having a chemistry set as a child, gleefully setting off Mount Etna and seeing what comes out.
You can, though make a plan of the outcomes you wish to achieve in life and be more targetted than I'm suggesting. If you want to be a tennis pro, or you've dreamed of making your living from art then you need to get to know people who know about or do these things themselves. Opportunities cannot be found sitting in a garret at the top of the house dreaming or writing about them. Action plays a vital part.
Another part in attracting opportunities is not to give up, and recognising when an opportunity, whilst not getting you all the way to your dreams, might suceed in getting you nearer in them. It might be increasing your conversation skills with people ready for when you meet the right person to influence your life, or just the general happiness and attractive contentment that exudes from people who have a fulfilled existence.
You never know who might be taking note of you volunteering somewhere, or otherwise doing something that is just for the good of the society you live in. Embrace life, and stretch out and let it bring to you its rich cornucopia of opportunity and you will achieve your goals.
