Do Tarot Cards Work?
Divination has been around as long as mankind. Its forms have been many, often based on culture or religious beliefs. I suppose the most powerful form I can think of is Shamanism, although this goes a lot further than just divination.
For centuries cards have been used as divination tools, and nearly everyone has heard of the tarot. These days there are many divination card packs to satisfy our need for spiritual guidance and prophecy. But do they work?
I believe that they do, in the right hands. In the wrong hands they are nothing more than a parlour game. And there lies the problem with belief in any sort of divination. It is the person doing the reading, and not the cards themselves who has the talent.
So why then do we use a pack of cards at all, or stones, runes, sticks, coins for that matter, if it is the person that has the ability.
Many people place their faith into a card pack, as if the pack were some magical thing. In fact the cards are a tool, just as a carpenter has his plane and sander, a builder his trowel, the cards are there to help us in our work. They tune us in, let us see in the right direction, help us connect with a different plane. Whether we connect with a parallel time, a spirit realm or a deeper place within our own selves is realistically irrelevant.
Once we have tuned to this place we can then interpret the reading, using the cards as a symbolic reminder. This is why Tarot or card readers often find different packs work better for them than others. It has nothing to do with the pack itself, but instead to do with how the images work for us on a symbolic level.
Then there is hard work involved. Like any art or talent it improves with training. Meditation helps greatly in this. Not just for gaining insight into a card, but also meditation as an approach to clearing the mind and deepening your relationship with self, so as to more easily access the intuitive levels of consciousness and extend our awareness to all levels of existence.
A big problem with divination is a belief that it tells the future, like a fortune teller. This belittles the power of the diviner. The cards give insight into a question and can offer us guidance as to how to deal with a situation. All readers should beware of ever telling a client anything different. The reading is taking into account the energy of the client at this moment, their thoughts, emotions and how this vibrates within the soul and the clients surroundings. As a reader you need to learn to sense your client with your mind, your body and your soul to get a true feeling for their question and the cards they have picked. This can still work over a phone line. Energy transmits well this way.
In conclusion I think that we can say that tarot works, under certain conditions as I have mentioned above. In other cases it can be a hit and miss affair, although I believe that everyone has the ability, with training and meditation to at least use the cards as a guide for their own lives.
