Video game reviews: Elder Scrolls IV, Oblivion (Xbox 360)

The world of Tamrial is changing rapidly. The dragon fires, the holy essence that holds back the great evils of the cosmos have gone dark, and the world is placed upon the shoulders of a single hero.

This is pretty much the intro to the newest game in the Elder Scrolls series entitled Oblivion. Bethesda, a company renowned for the Elder Scrolls series and the Fall Out series has taken the next big leap with this title. The game starts off at a high pace giving you the sense of how desperate things are with the emperor having to be ferreted through the dungeons just to be able to escape assassins sent to kill him. The game does a good job of making you feel how dark things are with the great voice acting and worried tones, as well as the dark music and even darker personalities. This by no means however means the game is dark itself. Its just so well fleshed out one cannot avoid being dragged into the struggles of the game. And with that I will now go into detail of the pluses and minuses of the game.

Let's start with the character generation engine. This engine has a high detail graphics ability meaning things such as wrinkles and eye brows show up nicely. The engine includes hair eyebrow nose lips and many more features that can be tweaked and twisted into nearly any number of possibilities from a wood elf with purple hair and green eye brows with ice blue eyes to a Breton with simple brown hair and green eyes. The mix and matches for facial features are nearly limitless. You can make a character either male or female and any of the primary races. These races include Nords who are a combat orientated race, Bretons who are a magically orientated race, and Khajit a feline anthromorphic race made more for stealth. The facial features and pretty much anything from the shoulders up can be tweaked to your hearts content on all the races till you get something you will enjoy looking at for a long time to come.

The down fall of this character generator is in the minor details. For example you cannot tweak anything below the shoulders to do things like increase your female characters bust or give your male character a tighter six pack. There is also no feature for adding minor quirk to flesh the character out such as scars or body piercing. These would have been a nice addition because it could've been used to make the character look more real. You also have minimal control over such things as your characters height only being able to either make the character short average
