For most brides and grooms, the wedding isn't over after vows are exchanged. In most cases, the ceremony is followed by a reception where there is usually music and dancing, cake and punch, sometimes a full meal, and even a bar. Where to hold this celebration is an important consideration because your guests will spend more time at the reception than they will sitting in the church.
SIZE
When deciding where to hold your reception, the very first thing you must consider is the size of the venue. No matter how beautiful, affordable, or fun it might be, if the building isn't big enough to hold all of your guests, it just won't do. A sit-down dinner will require much more space than if you're serving only hors d'oeurves. If you plan on having a DJ or band, you'll need room to accommodate all the equipment. Most locations that host wedding receptions regularly will have someone on staff who can help determine if the space is large enough for your needs. If you are planning an outdoor reception, space isn't as big an issue but don't forget to check that there is enough parking for the number of guests.
FOOD & DRINK
Another important consideration is whether the location has catering service, allows outside catering, or has a kitchen if you plan to provide the food yourself. Many venues require you to use their own catering services. In this case, you will usually pay a higher per-guest rate which includes the food, service, and clean up, as well as the room rental. When considering a location with in-house catering, make sure you sample the food before you decide just as you would with an independent caterer.
Another very important factor in your decision is whether you plan to serve liquor and whether the location allows you to provide your own. It is usually much cheaper to hire your own bartender and supply the drinks yourself. Some locations will allow you to bring in your own liquor but require you to use their bartender. In this case you'll pay a corkage fee but this is still less expensive than having them provide everything for the bar.
MUSIC AND DANCING
Do you plan to have music at your reception? What about dancing? No matter what type of music you want - a band, DJ, or recorded music - it will require electrical outlets. This can be an issue with outdoor receptions. Before you book a space, make sure it has the electrical supply you'll need. You will also want to consider the dance space. When looking at a venue, don't just think about how many people can fit
