How to write a love letter

Have you finally decided to declare your undying love to that certain someone? A sure way avoid some awkward verbal fumbling is to commit your sentiments to paper via a love letter. Writing a love letter shows that you've taken the time and effort to scour the depths of your soul, that you've splurged on that expensive stationary, and that you know how to relate your feelings with class and elegance.

First, start by brainstorming what is unique about your feelings. What can you say about you or your relationship that doesn't sound corny or contrived? Is there a certain anecdote or special "inside joke" that only you two know about? What about secret pet names? Using these details in your letter can help strengthen the emotional connection that you already share, without sounding like you stole lines from a romantic comedy. Relating priceless memories carries far more value than spouting off some cheesy lines just to sound good.

Also, don't try to become Shakespeare overnight. Now is not the time to experiment with iambic pentameter and trying to make your letter rhyme will only trivialize it and turn it into a joke. If you really want to include a poem, really spend some time and make it count. A quality poem doesn't necessarily have to rhyme. Remember,if you're not a poet, your love- letter will not turn you into one, no matter how hard you try.

Another good idea is making sure your handwriting is legible. Nothing will kill the mood more than trying to decipher chicken scratch while reading your love letter. A person's handwriting is about as personal as their fingerprints, so make sure you don't change your writing style too much. The letter should contain the best attributes of your writing style, and be as neat as possible. Also, make sure that your grammar is perfect. If there's any doubt about your spelling prowess, employ a trusted friend to give your letter a once-over.

Above all, make sure that the message is clear and that your letter successfully relays your feelings. If you write down some specific points you want to get across on a piece of scratch paper, then you can get creative later without worrying that your love will miss out on the jist of your letter.

By following these guidelines you are can be sure that your love letter will live on throughout the ages. Maybe someday your letter will be preserved right next to those of the greats for future generations to read.
