There is a common misunderstanding among the general population that in order to create a website you need time, money, and patience. The belief that you need to hire someone to create a website for you, whether for personal use or business, is just a complete myth. In today's world, you don't need to know any internet coding languages to get started! The only thing you need to know is where to start.
1) FIND A FREE HOST
The first step is finding a free web host to host your website. There are millions of sites that offer free hosting. Depending on what kind of website you're going to want, your decision may differ.
Blogging Website
If you plan on getting a blog up, Livejournal.com and Wordpress.com are excellent choices. They offer their blogging software already installed on your website, along with free templates and side content that is easy to update. These two sites are completely free, and are very popular-making your blog more visible to the public. Livejournal is a better choice for personal blogs and journals, because it allows you to add friends, and password protect your blog or certain posts. Wordpress allows you to do this to a certain extent, but Wordpress is more suitable for a more professional blog.
Content Website
If your website is going to have an assortment of other content on it, but you don't want to deal with the layout and scripting, a good website is Weebly.com. When I set up my site on Weebly, I not only got a professional, ad-free site up, but I got one up in a matter of minutes. Weebly's site editor is extremely easy to use, and has tons of premade layouts that look professional and clean. Their website editor lets you easily add, remove, and alter text, while adding a bunch of other features like a blog, Google adsense, pictures, files, videos, Google maps, photo galleries, RSS, and much more.
These are among the most popular and flexible free hosts, but feel free to search around on your own. Simply doing a web search for 'free hosting' will give you thousands of results.
2) CREATE YOUR WEBSITE
Now its time to actually create the site. After signing up for the free host, you will be brought to their website editor. Most of these are easy-to-use graphical interfaces, but some might require a bit of your own coding. If you don't have any coding skills, be sure to find a website generator that allows you to do it all graphically.
Following the generator should get your layout and scripting issues out of the way. Set up your pages, scripts, or blogs just how you want them to look. Point your browser to your website and check everything out to make sure it looks good.
3) ADD CONTENT
Now that you have all the dirty work out of the way, it's time to add content. Depending on what type of site you have, your content will differ. If it's a blog, you can get started by just writing your first post. If it's a personal website, you can start adding an 'About me' page, add to a blog, or start uploading photos. For a business website, add an 'About us' page, location information, information on products or services, and a contact page.
A website should not take anyone more than a few hours to create, unless you're planning a huge corporate website with customized scripting. Many of us aren't doing that however. Now go create that site, and get your information out there!
