Short stories: Rules

"Do you think she's pretty?" they said simultaneously then laughed. Logan and Claire had been doing that since they were ten years old. They always laughed about it, were amazed by it and liked it very much when they did it though they never admitted it.

"Stop getting in my head, you," she said trying to look stern and failing miserably.

He grinned and took a long drink from his beer smacking his lips. "Well, to answer the question, I don't know what all the fuss is about. I mean, I know she's pretty in some way despite her wide mouth and tiny, beady eyes but she's just...I don't know. She just doesn't float my boat," Logan said dismissively.

"Despite her wide mouth? That's what everyone thinks is so fantastic about her. And tiny, beady eyes? They look okay to me," Claire said as she stared at the TV screen trying to see Julia Roberts through his eyes, "I suppose they could be bigger."

"Even if they were, you can't trust her. She looks...shifty, untrustworthy. It must be the eyes," he said derisively.

She laughed. "So, large-eyed women can be trusted? Is that what you're saying?" she asked incredulously, her own turquoise colored eyes wide as saucers.

He frowned. "No, I suppose there's more to it but, just the same, I don't think she's to die for."

"So, who is to die for?" she asked albeit casually. She watched him surreptitiously out of the corner of her eye.

He lifted the beer bottle to his lips, emptying it. If he weren't bound by Honor-Among-Thieves mentality he might have answered truthfully. He didn't want to play by the rules but his sense of decency wouldn't allow him to do otherwise. Claire was his best friend's wife and completely off limits though he'd been in love with her since they met fifteen years ago. "Oh, you know, anything breathing and wearing Victoria's secret is fine with me," he said carelessly. That and looking exactly like Claire, he wanted to add.

"Now you sound like Jimmy. You are no Jimmy," she retorted sounding equal parts miffed and achingly sad. That's what she liked about Logan, had always liked about him, the fact he was so very different from Jimmy.

No, he wasn't anything like Jimmy. Logan knew that and would always have a tinge of envy for it. Jimmy was the all-American golden boy. Girls couldn't get enough of him and he of them. And Jimmy had Claire, didn't he? Logan, on the other hand, had nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. He was a successful veterinarian, owned his own home and had many friends, animal and human alike. But best
