If you ask me why I love winter, I would probably tell you what so many others have spoken of. My reasons may be a slight bit different, because I was born in a place where we celebrated winter, and its glorious gifts. I could not imagine Christmas without a blanket of snow.
I remember waking up to snow failing, and the ground cover with a mantle of glistening white.the trees ablaze like diamonds, and the scarlet cardinals, like rubies among the branches of the juniper trees. I couldn't wait to get up and have a hot breakfast of oatmeal, and hot chocolate. My mum would have our clothes ready, for school, and we always dressed in lawyers, to keep out the cold. Dazzling sunshine on the freshly packed snow, would almost blind . It usually began around thanksgiving, and continue till maybe March. We waited for the weather to tell us that school would be canceled, because, of the latest amount of snowfall.Yes we loved it!
As the month of November rolled around we would begin making holiday plans. The family would start by, making a list for the gifts we would by, and pray we could not get snowed in, but we loved it. Everyone was excited , and the neighbors would often show up to shovel driveways. the world took on a peaceful quality, and everything was covered in a glorious layer of purity. The gardens would rest, and the summer birds wul retreat to a warmer climate. we had so may lovely winter birds, that it did not matter. The squirrels would play, and the rabbits would play hide and seek.
When school was over for the holidays we would toboggan, ski, or snow shoe. The lucky ones had snowmobiles. We couldn't wait to go zipping around the fields and the back roads. Sometimes we even dared the frozen river. I learned to figure skate, and was usually out everyday.I practiced on the river behind the house, and was truly happy, gliding over the frozen water, like a bird. I felt free, and never wanted it to end.
When December came around is when I was truly the happiest, and still love it today. I cannot imagine a Christmas without the blanket of snow, and the evergreens all aglow with twinkling lights. Winter held some of my happiest memories. We had school plays. and parties. and were free to enjoy, making snowmen, decorating for the holiday and drinking hot cider, or hot chocolate. My Dad would sometimes make a fire outside and we could skate, and sing carols. till very late. The days were filled with joy, and the promise of what was to come. We prayed for yet another
