What do carbohydrates do?

A carbohydrate is quite simply a form of food that gives you energy that your body needs to carry out and manage tasks during the day. Carbohydrates primarily affect every aspect of your daily routine, both physical and mental, from getting up out of bed in the morning and walking downstairs, from the mood you are in when you leave the house for work first thing in the morning, to how you cope with ordinary tasks during the day and the way you act and react to things and people around you. As you can possibly tell; carbohydrates in healthy moderation are single-handedly the most important aspect of a daily dietary routine. Without the addition of carbohydrates in our diet, our body is lacking the energy needed to function.

The importance of carbohydrates is obvious; the key thing to question is where to get them from. The confusion of carbohydrates often comes from the fact that the majority of high fat, high saturate and generally unhealthy foods such as pastries, fried foods and snacks are high in carbohydrates. When on the news and in general life you hear that carbohydrates are an important aspect of a diet, you will automatically think that eating those specific foods is good for you, especially if you are not familiar or are uneducated with food, health, fitness and general nutrition.

As you may suspect, those specific foods are highly bad for you. Any food high in both saturated fats AND carbohydrates should be avoided at all costs. There are plenty of ways to get carbohydrates during a modern daily dietary routine without the need to splash out on unhealthy and dangerous foods.

The foods that contain good carbohydrates are in high numbers. You will come into contact with them on a daily basis and probably not even realize the health potential that they have. This can be anything from whole meal bread, pasta, spaghetti, rice, noodles and potatoes. Of course, to get the healthiest results from these carbohydrate foods you need to cook them correctly. Grilling and boiling is the healthy choice; you should always avoid frying your food.

Some diets however eliminate the need for a lot of carbohydrates. I am personally a health, fitness and nutrition enthusiast, and in my daily diet routine I rarely snack out on carbohydrates and try to avoid them at all costs, except for first thing in a morning during breakfast time where I try to include them in my breakfast. I have never had a problem with energy issues due to this, and I am on mainly a high protein, low carbohydrate diet and have no problems at all. This adds more questions; are carbohydrates really as important as they were once made out to be?

Carbohydrates are often criticized for their potential to make a person gain weight. This only occurs when you over indulge on foods rich in carbohydrates such as bread. This is of course easily avoidable. Simply include a healthy mixture of both carbohydrates and proteins in your daily meal routine to avoid the unexpected weight gain while maintaining a healthy balance in your food at the same time. If you are interested in weight loss however, you should definitely keep your carbohydrate intake to a bare minimum. One or two slices of bread for breakfast are enough, and then you can stick to a protein routine for the rest of the day.
