Puzzle Hero by Genimo Interactive is a puzzle game with Role-play game (RPG) elements, these are not new concepts but the result is an addictive amalgamation.
At the start of the game you are asked to create your character, you have a choice of hairstyle, clothing and skin tone but sadly not gender, you have to play as a female character which means that this game may not appeal so much to male players. Once you have created your character you are then ready to begin your quest. The quest consists of duels that are played against computer-controlled monsters in the same manner as the popular Bejewelled series, this means that the controls are familiar and, consequently, are easy to learn. Rather than matching gems though, you match items that will help your character in their duel. In your first few battles you are given basic instructions on what the different items do; matching three or more of the correct icons will make you attack your enemy, heal, gain experience, collect mana or build up for a super attack or a super shield.
The battles are turn-based using the same grid, so after you have had your turn, it is the monsters turn, the players keep alternating until the battle is concluded. This means that you have to think a step or two ahead to avoid giving your opponent easy attacks. After each battle you have the option of continuing your quest of going to the shop, salon or the map. In the shop you can spend the gold you have earned on new equipment, such as armour, swords and magical items. In the salon you can change your characters hairstyle or even skin tone. From the map you can go to any previously uncovered cities and go to their respective shop, salon or arena. In the arena you can fight any of the monsters you have already defeated in a one-off battle.
The graphics are well presented, with good-looking, if at some points unusual 3D monsters including rogue beans, pumpkins and tomatoes! The heroine also looks good and this is enhanced by the way that you can fully customize her appearance through the shops and salons. The storyline is aimed at younger players but seems a bit weak and unimportant; also the graphics used to represent the story let the rest of the game down as they are just the same sepia-style pictures used over and over again. The music and sound effects are simple but fit this style of game perfectly. The game play is addictive but it is a pity that if you lose a duel there is no penalty, you do not lose any gold, experience or have to start that stage again.
The best bits: Good-looking 3D characters, addictive game play, fully customizable character.
The worst bits: Poor storyline which is poorly graphically represented, female character only, no two player option.
Overall: 3/5
