Video game reviews: Grand Theft Auto IV

by Thomas A. Polymath

Grand Theft Auto 4 could very well be the most anticipated game of the year. It was meant to be released many months ago but was postponed until 2008 after receiving commentary of looking unfinished and rough around the edges. Many diverse multiplayer game types were promised such as Cops N' Crooks, Races, Team Deathmatch, and the list goes on. Without further delay, lets take a look at the SIXTH installment in the Grand Theft Auto series. For the sake of accuracy I'll be calling the game by it's correct name of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Story

The story of GTA 6 is probably it's strongest and most valuable aspect. It has everything that you would expect from a great novel or movie. Within this epic storyline you'll find twists, drama, (hysterical) humor, action, romance, and alot of character development. Many other reviewers have called it worthy of being a movie, I call it being worthy of a series. Niko Bellic, a Bosnian war veteran, has come to Liberty City to start over and live a good life with his rich cousin Roman, who consistently claimed in his emails to Niko to have a huge mansion, sports cars, and two women. Upon arriving Niko quickly discovers his cousin's lying ways. Roman's real intentions were to recruit Niko into helping him pay off his debts owed to many criminal faces. I won't delve much further into the story from now on because I refuse to spoil anything and ruin someones experience with this game. For me the characters seemed to "take shifts" during the story. For example: Roman is very involved at the beginning but after a certain point he drifts to the backround and dosen't become involved story wise again until near the climax. This applies to all the characters, not just Roman.

Graphics

The graphics don't quite look next gen to me. The lighting effects seem off, so does the water, but the cars look fantastic! Sometimes when performing an action Niko's body will shift and glitch around but this dosen't effect the action itself, only the visuals. Other than that I can't comment much more about the the graphics. Overall they're pretty good.

Gameplay

Niko automatically walks when you push the left stick forward, he jogs when you hold down the A button, and he runs when you tap it. You can climb over obstacles, roll to cover, as well as many other actions. While there are alot of actions to do the main focus is the driving and the combat. Fist to fist fighting is accomplished by waiting for your opponent to attack and at the right moment pressing A to dodge and then attacking to execute a cool looking counter-attack. A cover system has been introduced to make gunfights more action oriented and fluent. You can also shoot from your vehicle by holding down the LB button. If this is your first time playing a GTA game, then like me you won't be good at driving at first. But by the end you'll be a master at all aspects of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Multiplayer

To be blunt and honest, the multiplayer is probably the weakest part of this game. Many people like the large city-wide maps, however I find the large maps to be the multiplayer's biggest weakness. You shouldn't have to run a marathon simply to get to an enemy player or to get a weapon. Most of the time when I tried to connect to a match I got a message on the lines of "Signal disconnected, returning to singleplayer." If you but GTA 6, don't bother with the online.

Conclusion

I can't make many major complaints against GTA 6 aside from the multiplayer. It's probably the best entry in the series as of yet, and I hope to see more from Rockstar in the future.
