Congratulations! After searching and submitting your perfected resume, you have scored an interview! As you are (hopefully) practicing possible question-and-answer scenarios, attention must be given to a perhaps even more importnat aspect to the interview: your appearance. Although you are more focused on the actual interview (and rightly so), we musn't forget that an interviewer bases the majority of their decision on first impressions. So great, you have perfect answers to their questions, but unless you are on a phone interview, then you aren't entirely in the clear. Since the majority of human communication is based on non-verbal signals, personal appearance falls in to place here when you are on a face-to-face interview.
An interviewer will expect that a potential employer will look their very best on an interview. So if you don't dress well, then they will assume that you will look even worse on the job.
With all of this being said, it is more difficult as a woman to decide what to wear to impress an interviewer. Men are in the clear with a nice business suit. However as women, we want to look good but be taken seriously at the same time. So what should you wear to leave a great first impression?
CLOTHING
First, the best thing to wear to an interview is a business suit, pant or skirt, even if it is 100 degress outside. Don't be afraid of being over-dressed; your interviewer will be impressed and it is better to be over-dressed than under. As far as color goes, stick to a black, navy, or dark gray suit, as these are more professional. You certainly don't want to make too much of a statement in a crazy color! For a color under the suit, make sure it is your best and complements it. Nothing makes you look more professional and powerful than wearing the right colors for you.
SHOES
As far as footwear goes, make sure your shoes are comfortable and polished. Black closed-toe shoes are usually most professional for an interview. You don't have to wear heels if you aren't comfortable in them; just be sure that they are appropriate with your outfit.
ACCESSORIES
Don't assume that you can't have fun with a few accessories to wear at your interview. In fact, a few simple, yet bold pieces really make your outfit and give you a more authoritative appearance.
COSMETICS
Last, don't be afraid to wear make-up and other beauty products. Go for a look that is you but don't wear anything dramatic that you would wear to a night-club. Also be sure that your nails are clean and in good shape, preferabbly with a natural color on them.
The lesson here is to look professional and to wow the interviewer while still being yourself. Plan what you are going to wear in advance and maybe even try everything on prior to the interviewer. If you don't feel confident and comfortable in your outfit, then adjustments must be made. Don't be stuck pulling an outfit together at the last minute! Once you have made your good first impression, you can wow your prospective employer with the great interview you have prepared for. Good luck!
