When completing the rental agreement for a car you read or are given the option as to whether to buy collision damage waiver. As it is not compulsory for a moment you consider not bothering to pay out the extra. After all, you are a good driver and have not had an accident in years. Furthermore, you have fully comprehensive cover through your own vehicle insurance policy. So maybe you do not need this additional cost? If this were your response I would urge you to reconsider. If you analysis the situation in more depth you will find that in reality there are a number of extremely important reasons for investing in collision waver damage.
Firstly, let us look at your exemplary driving record. Naturally it is something that you should be justly proud of. However, it has equally been contributed to by the fact that you have not experienced too many mistakes made by other people and drivers. For example, if a pedestrian steps out of the road in front of your vehicle with no warning it is an automatic reaction to swerve the car away from any possible collision with them. This increases you chances of hitting another vehicle. Of course another driver could come up against the same obstacle and in swerving may hit your car. Furthermore, irrespective of how good a driver you are it has to be remembered that we all make mistakes and, there is an equal chance of that mistake happening while you are driving a rental car as at another time of during your motoring travels. Just a fraction of a second's lack of concentration is all that it takes to find yourself finding a heavy repair bill, which is the last thing you need.
Collision damage waver is also important even if your own car insurance policy covers you for driving any other vehicle with the owner's consent, which is what would happen in the case of a rented vehicle. However, although that policy is comprehensive with regards to the driving of your own vehicle, the situation is different in the vehicle is not owned by you. In the majority of case when driving someone else's vehicle and using your own policy as cover it will revert to a third-party situation. This means that the Insurance Company will pay for damage to any other person and property but nothing towards the cost of repair any damage to the vehicle you are borrowing or renting. Therefore such an accident can work out costly if you do not have waiver collision cover, especially if the rental company is the party that can determine where any repairs can be carried out.
For the reasons that have been explained above and many others, as well as your own peace of mind, it is considered essential that collision damage waiver should be included within the original rental agreement.
