The Lesson
The devil came to town one night;
Around an around my cabin,
He did dance.
Searching with roving eyes,
He screamed in the pale moonlight.
Take warning my young friend,
For it's for sure I've come.
Listen for whom the bells now toll;
Give on to me your immortal soul.
Only then my quest shall end.
Gazing back with angry eyes,
I met his grim son glare;
While dancing and taunting,
His crimson silhouette drew near.
Reaching for my tattered book,
I held it oh so high;
From within the worn pages,
I began to read from the verses found inside.
He then took him to a mountain,
He offered him a share.
For one small act of worship,
He said, he'd give him all,
The earthly kingdoms,
That he could see down there.
Turning to the devil,
Then came his calm reply,
That which you now offer me;
In hope that I might die,
Is not a part of father's kingdom from on high?
The devil's face grew angry;
It turned a hollowed green.
I thought for sure the town would wake,
When he begin to scream.
Then came a flash of lightening,
And a clap of thunder near;
Right before my very eyes,
The devil disappeared
