Prologue to Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Jack worked at the ropes that secured his hands together. Beads of sweat dripped off of his forehead and into his lap. The ropes on his ankles were tied just as tight as the ones around his wrists. He let out a muffled exasperated groan from beneath his taped mouth.
He was thirsty. It had been hours since he'd had something to drink. A cold bottle of Mountain Dew was his last drink. Right now he wished he would have drunk that shot of Jack Daniels like he really wanted to do. He loved Jack Daniels. He swallowed hard, trying to savor the memory of his last drink. His last drink? He didn't like the sounds of that. There was no way that he was going out like this. Not like this.
His hands had already fallen asleep, making virtually impossible to free himself. His abductor hadn't returned yet. Or had he? If he had returned, Jack wasn't aware of his presence. Or was he?
His heart began to pound harder against his rib cage. He ignored the pain shooting across his chest, took a deep breath and pulled against the ropes. The sharp pain grew more intense as Jack let out a muffled pain-filled cry and slumped back down into the chair. If his abductor didn't kill him, his heart would.
He closed his eyes and thought of Betsy, his pride and joy, his little girl. He smiled beneath the duct tape as his mind replayed precious recorded images of her. Her beautiful green eyes were like emerald diamonds sparkling in the light. Suddenly, he felt a renewed strength rise from within him. He bolted upward and sat straight up in the chair.
He began untying the ropes on his feet. He saw movement outside near the porch. A shadow of something had passed by the glare of the porch light. He froze. He squinted through the darkness, but he couldn't see anything other than the dimmed porch light. Where was he?
Jack cocked his head to the side and listened. Nothing. He heard nothing but a deafening silence. There wasn't any noise. That was odd. Jack didn't know of any places in Atlanta that were this quiet. This was odd.
He slowly and
